Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj belonged to this noble lineage of spiritual personalities whose entire life reflected dedication to Guru, God, and humanity.

Through simplicity, austerity, spiritual discipline, compassion, and selfless service, he became an inspiration to monks, students, devotees, and ordinary people alike.
Spiritual Heritage
Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj was spiritually blessed to become a mantra disciple and spiritual son of Swami Shivananda, affectionately known as Mahapurush Maharaj. Swami Shivananda was one of the direct monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna and later served as the second President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
Mahapurush Maharaj was revered throughout the Ramakrishna Order for his saintliness, compassion, fatherly affection, and deep spiritual realization. To come under his guidance was itself a transformative blessing. Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj absorbed deeply the spiritual ideals taught by his Guru — humility, surrender to God, purity of mind, truthfulness, devotion, and selfless service.
Throughout his life, he remained devoted to the memory and teachings of Mahapurush Maharaj. Those who later met Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj often felt that he carried within himself the calmness, tenderness, and spiritual depth associated with his revered Guru.
Joining Belur Math
Drawn by intense spiritual longing, he eventually joined the monastic Order at Belur Math. Belur Math at that period was still spiritually vibrant with the living influence of the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna and their immediate successors.
The atmosphere of the Math emphasized meditation, worship, self-discipline, service to humanity, scriptural study, and renunciation. Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj embraced this life wholeheartedly. He accepted hardships and discipline cheerfully, believing that spiritual life required dedication, patience, and surrender.
His monastic training strengthened his character and deepened his spiritual life. He learned to perform every duty — whether worship, service, or ordinary daily work — with devotion and sincerity.
A Life of Simplicity and Renunciation
One of the most striking features of Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj’s life was his extraordinary simplicity. He lived with very few personal needs and avoided all forms of luxury or self-importance. His room, clothing, habits, and daily routine reflected the spirit of renunciation taught by the Ramakrishna tradition.
He believed that true spirituality grows best in a mind free from selfish desires and worldly distractions. Even when people praised him or sought his blessings, he remained humble and detached. He never sought recognition or fame.

The most important institutional achievement of his life was the establishment of Satgachia Shri Ramakrishna Ashram.

This sacred bond was based not merely on personal affection but on shared spiritual ideals and devotion to their Guru. Their mutual respect and cooperation strengthened the spiritual activities associated with both Ashrams.
Connection with Mahesh Shri Ramakrishna Ashram
From around 1952–53 onward, Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj maintained close association with Mahesh Shri Ramakrishna Ashram.
He frequently visited the Ashram and often stayed there for extended periods. His visits brought joy and spiritual inspiration to the monks, students, devotees, and local admirers connected with the institution.

Adviser and President

On 13 November 1989, at about 8:00 PM, Swami Muktatmananda Maharaj attained Mahasamadhi at Satgachia.
The news spread sorrow among devotees connected with Satgachia Shri Ramakrishna Ashram, Mahesh Shri Ramakrishna Ashram, and many other spiritual circles. Devotees felt that they had lost a saintly guide whose affection and spiritual strength had quietly supported many lives.
Yet his influence did not end with physical departure. The institutions he nurtured, the ideals he embodied, and the memories he left behind continue to inspire devotees even today.
