Revered Swami Baladevanandaji Maharaj was born on 1 November 1957 (15 Kartik 1364 B.S., Shukla Dashami, Friday) in the village of Uchalpukuri in the Cooch Behar district of North Bengal. His parents were Sri Rajkanta Adhikari and Srimati Hiranmoyee Devi. His childhood name was Suresh. Raised in a devout and culturally rich family, he developed from an early age a deep appreciation for religion, spirituality, and the traditional values of Indian culture.
Possessing an inquisitive mind and a natural inclination toward scriptural learning, he pursued higher studies in Sanskrit and Vedantic philosophy. He obtained his Master’s degree in Advaita Vedanta from the Sri Sitaram Vaidik Adarsha Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Kolkata. Thereafter, he had the privilege of studying Advaita Vedanta under the guidance of the renowned scholar Dr. Lokanath Chakraborty at the Tol Department of the Government Sanskrit College, Kolkata. His years of rigorous study provided him with a profound understanding of the scriptures and the philosophical heritage of India.
The ideals of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda deeply influenced his spiritual aspirations. On 9 January 1973, he received Mantra Diksha from the revered Swami Vireshwarananda, the tenth President of the Ramakrishna Order. This sacred initiation marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of spiritual discipline, devotion, and selfless service.
After years of dedicated spiritual practice and scriptural study, he embraced the monastic life. On 12 March 1986, the holy birth anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna, he was formally initiated into Sannyasa at the sacred temple of Sri Ramakrishna at Belur Math by the revered Swami Gambhirananda, the eleventh President of the Ramakrishna Order. Upon receiving Sannyasa, he was given the monastic name Swami Baladevananda.
Throughout his monastic life, Swami Baladevanandaji has exemplified the harmonious blending of Jnana (knowledge), Bhakti (devotion), and Karma (selfless service). A scholar of Vedanta and a sincere spiritual practitioner, he has dedicated himself to the dissemination of the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda.
Known for his profound scriptural knowledge and lucid style of exposition, he has delivered numerous lectures on the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Advaita Vedanta, and the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda philosophy. His ability to explain subtle philosophical concepts in simple and accessible language has made him a respected teacher among students, devotees, and seekers alike.
At present, Swami Baladevanandaji is serving at Mahesh Shri Ramakrishna Ashram. Through his dedicated service, he has contributed significantly to the spiritual, educational, and cultural activities of the Ashram. He is also the editor of the Ashram’s spiritual journal, “Namastasyai.” Under his editorial guidance, the publication has become a valuable medium for promoting spiritual values, scriptural studies, and the ideals of the Ramakrishna movement.
